General rules of kruisjassen
- Kruisjassen is a card game played with 4 people. The players sitting opposite each other form a team.
- The game is played with 32 playing cards, the piquet cards. These are the 7, 8, 9, 10, jack, queen, king and ace of each suit.
- Each card has a point rating and relative value. This will be explained in more detail later.
- As in most card games, the player comes out to the left of the dealer at the beginning of the game.
- The player with the highest card wins the trick. If there is a trump, the player with the highest trump card wins the trick.
- The winner of the trick must come out the next trick.
- Only the first trick played may be looked back at by any player while the second trick is still in progress.
- Players must follow suit at all times if possible, except if a player trumps a trick. Hence a player may trump a trick, even if he is able to follow suit. If a player cannot follow suit, he or she may play another card of their choice.
- When a trick is already trumped, you are not allowed to throw a lower trump card, except when a trump card is led or if you’re not able to do otherwise.
Dealing cards
- Each player receives 8 cards.
- The dealing order used is 3-2-3.
- The dealer (also called giver), places the last card he himself receives face up on the table. This turned over card is the trump suit for that round. Once each player has seen the card, the dealer takes the card back into his hand.
- A variation also used is that from the pile of unused piquet cards, one card is turned over. The turned over card determines the trump color.

Scoring kruisjassen variant 1
Below is how the score is calculated after a round.
- If a team has won 100 points or more, each player of this team gets 2 points. If none of the teams scored 100 points or more, no points will be distributed that round.
- If a team has won all the tricks, then each player of this team gets 5 points.
- Play continues up to a predetermined number of points, often this is 11. It is also possible to agree in advance on a certain number of rounds, for example 8. The winning team is the one with the highest score after 8 games.
Scoring kruisjassen variant 2
- The players agree on how many trees they will play. A tree consists of 16 games (gifts).
- Then the number of points for each game is counted. In this variant, therefore, a team does not have to achieve 100 points in one game to score.
- In a pit, if a team wins all tricks, then the team receives an additional 100 points. If a team wins 146 points, but not all tricks, it isn’t scored as a pit.
- After 16 games, the total number of points is added up for each team. The team with the highest number of points is the winner.
- You can view underneath an example of a scoring form for kruisjassen for scoring variant 2.
Kruisjassen is very similar to the card game klaverjassen. The rules of the game are a little simpler than those of klaverjassen. Therefore, kruisjassen is a more accessible card game. This game is especially popular in the east of the Netherlands. In the south of the Netherlands, rikken is better known and more popular.
