General rules of limit toepen

The general rules of limit toepen are the same as classic toepen.

1. It can be played with 2 to 8 players. Normally it is played with 4 players.
2. Toepen is played with piquet cards. The cards 2 to 6 are left out of the deck of cards.
3. The value of the cards is as follows from low to high: jack, queen, king, ace, 7, 8, 9, 10.
4. Players should always confess suit if possible.
5. The goal of the game is to win the last trick.

Game play in limit toepen

There are differences between the gameplay of limit toepen and classic toepen.

• At the start of each round each player has 10 chips.
• Before dealing, each player puts one chip in the pot. This is the ante.
• After the deal, play proceeds clockwise. The player to the left of the dealer is the first to take an action: either playing a card or knocking. A player can only knock before has has played a card.
• Once a player has knocked, the remaining players still in the game must decide whether to call, fold (pass), or over-knock (raise). The player to the left of the knocking player is the first to make this decision. If a player calls, they must place one chip into the pot. If a player folds, he discards his cards and is no longer active in the hand. A player also has the option to over-knock, which in poker terms is equivalent to raising. In this case a player place the amount of chips in the pot in orde to call ánd 1 chip for overknocking.
• A player is never allowed to knock twice in a row, even across different tricks. Only after another player has knocked, you can knock again.
• A player may only knock when it is their turn.
• A player can win if all other players have folded or by winning the last trick. The winner of the game receives the pot.
• After each game, the supply of chips is replenished to 10. In case of playing with real money, a player starts with the number of chips with which he finished the previous round. A player has the option of buying additional chips between rounds the up to the maximum number of chips a player may buy in.
• If, during a trick, the player who played the first card folds (after a knock has occurred during the trick), the players who have not yet played a card must still follow suit if possible. The winner of the trick is determined as follows:

  • The cards of all players who have folded are no longer considered when determining the highest card played in the trick.

  • If at least one player who has not folded has followed suit to the first card played, the player who has played the highest card of that suit among the remaining active players wins the trick.

  • If no player who has not folded has followed suit to the first card played, the winner is the player who has played the highest card of the suit of the card played by the first active player after the trick starter.

Why limit toepen

Kaartspellen.online has introduced limit toepen because it offers several advantages over classic toepen.

• Classic toepen is a card game in tournament form. Online, where players quickly join but also quickly leave the table, this means that complete pots are often not completed. Limit toepen is played pot by pot.
• Limit toepen is a zero sum game. This makes it easier to establish a ranking.
• Limit toepen is also suitable for tournaments. In a tournament limit toepen a player is eliminated when he has lost all his chips. In a tournament the antes are raised periodically.
• Limit toepen is also suitable to play for real money, also because it is a zero sum game. Poker chips can be used for this purpose. On kaartspellen.online we never play for real money.

Additional rules limit toepen (optional)

• Optionally you can play with dirty laundry. If a player has 4 picture cards (Jack, Queen, King or Ace) or 3 picture cards and a 7, he has dirty laundry. In this case, the player may declare that he has dirty laundry, put the cards away blind and take 4 new cards. A player may also bluff that he has dirty laundry. Any other player may therefore turn over the dirty laundry cards to check if they are actually dirty laundry cards. If the cards really do appear to be dirty laundry cards, then the player who turned over the dirty laundry must put 1 chip in the pot. Do the cards not turn out to be dirty laundry cards and thus the player who indicated this was bluffing? In that case, the bluffing player must put 1 chip in the pot and must play the round with his “dirty laundry” cards.

No Limit Toepen and Pot Limit Toepen

Limit Toepen can also be played in a no limit and pot limit variation.

• In the No Limit variant, a player who knocks may bet a number of chips of his own choosing at one time. The maximum is the number of chips the player has at that time.
• In the Pot Limit variant, a player who knocks may bet any number of chips of his choice at one time. The maximum is the size of the pot at the time the player knocks.
